Oxxo Presents Donation Collected During Fundraiser

The Pedro Zaragoza Vizcarra Foundation received a financial contribution, yesterday morning, in the amount of 751 thousand and 734 pesos, on behalf of the self-service commercial chain OXXO, which itself amassed the sum during a fundraiser whereby patrons of the convenience stores were asked to donate spare cents as part of their purchases in the months of March, April and May.

Verónica Jiménez Montes said that students at 11 educational institutions would benefit from free breakfast meals, with these funds.

She noted that preference is to be given to youths attending preschool and grade school, seeing as these are grades where the effects of malnutrition are most evident, due to a lack of vitamins, protein and minerals in their diets at home. “Children go to school without breakfast and suffer learning retention problems, unable to absorb all that the school can impart. They even complain of hunger and headaches well into the afternoon.”

She said that the breakfast meals distributed to the children will consist of a glass of .25 liters (approx. 8.5 ounces) of milk, a bowl of 40 grams (approx. 1.4 ounces) of cereal and a bowl of 50 grams (approx. 1.8 ounces) of yogurt.

Gas Pipe Confiscation for Hidro Gas

The gas pipe which was confiscated last week near San Diego, and which carried a four-ton load of cocaine, could be part of an extensive drug trafficking operation, according to a statement issued Wednesday by a United States Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) official.

Hidro Gas belongs to the Miguel Zaragoza Fuentes family, one of the wealthiest families in Mexico. Hidro Gas has subsidiaries throughout Mexico, in many Central American countries, and the state of Florida.

“This could be the tip of the iceberg,” said special agent Julius Beretta, who heads the DEA’s Southern California office.

Beretta stated, via telephone interview from San Diego, that he was one of the first to witness the pipe prior to its opening at the port of entry and saw no evidence that the seal had been compromised.

“I was astonished,” he said. “I have no idea how they managed to load it, seeing as the vapor from the gas was quite evident. This was a highly skilled job.”

Beretta stated that the gas pipe driver could have been instrumental in providing agents with information regarding the drug trafficking operation, but Customs released him in order to allow someone from the Tijuana office to open the tank.

Cassidy, from the Customs office in San Diego, identified the driver as Rubén Sánchez Tapia. She stated that Sánchez Tapia was released 8 hours after the pipe was initially held, seeing as agents did not find evidence of any criminal wrongdoing.

Cassidy stated that Sánchez Tapia vanished shortly after having been released. She further stated that the pipe, which had a capacity of 10,000 gallons, was not opened until 2pm the following day.

Beretta said that investigators suspect that Sánchez Tapia, a native of El Paso, has ties to the Tapia family, which is being processed by the Federal Court in Los Angeles for illegal possession of 21 tons of cocaine.

“For the time being, we have not established a connection,” said Beretta, “but Sánchez Tapia was a pipe driver who traversed these parts frequently.”

Rudolph Giuliani: Political and Advice for Juarez

Pedro Zaragoza meets Rudy Giuliani

At a ‘Competitive Juarez’ program special guest lecture, New York City’s former mayor Rudolph Giuliani introduced strategies to reduce crime in the city of Juarez. With an impressive record backing his name, Giuliani explained that one of the most important tools for fighting crime in big cities like New York or Juarez is the political will to do so.

Having served as a federal prosecutor for 27 years, Giuliani’s experience with criminal behavior enabled him to better combat crime itself.

“Ciudad Juarez and New York have many similar problems and many differences. But some of the things they say work anywhere, and here’s the first thing you will need to make Juarez a safer city: they need the political will to do so, from top to bottom,” Giuliani said during his speech at the Paso del Norte Cultural Center where Pedro Zaragoza Fuentes was in attendance.

Looking for every possible resource for assistance, Vicente’s grandmother, Francisca Isabel Gonzalez, has finally found the right people. After trying to get help from the General Hospital, the Municipality, and even the American government, Francisca finally found assistance with the Pedro Zaragoza Vizcarra Foundation.  Recently, Andrea Alvarez Rivas, in charge of the Social Assistance Project Implementation of the Pedro Zaragoza Vizcarra Foundation, accompanied the grandmother and grandson to Mexico City.

There, Vicente will be admitted to the Hospital Siglo XXI del Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social (IMSS) for his heart surgery.  Never ceasing in her determination, Francisca is grateful to the Foundation and to Pedro Zaragoza Fuentes for helping her grandson and she can’t wait to see him in full health again in the near future.

The Pedro Zaragoza Vizcarra Foundation Aids Society’s Most Vulnerable

The most vulnerable segment of society needs the most care and attention.  Often however, simply due to a lack of resources, these individuals just get left behind and their most basic needs are not even close to adequately met. This is where the Pedro Zaragoza Vizcarra Foundation tries to fill in the gaps – through various different methods of support and funding.  Ultimately, it is this funding which results in a greatly-improved quality of life for the most vulnerable members of Mexican society.

Through its program, Camino Light, the Pedro Zaragoza Vizcarra Foundation is truly giving hope to society’s most needy individuals. This translates into a true improvement of their quality of life.  The kind of people who are especially reaping the benefits are the disabled and the families battling desperate, severe poverty.  These sectors in society will be the recipients of weekly food packages, which comprise the basics like milk, cheese, yogurts, beverages and more.
